Working with Older Children

Sleep struggles with older children can feel especially frustrating - because it's often no longer "just sleep." 

At this age, bedtime resistance, night wakings, and difficulty falling asleep are often connected to behaviour, emotional needs, and a child’s growing awareness and independence.

For children 5.5+, I incorporate an additional layer of support that blends sleep coaching with behaviour guidance and emotional skill-building.

This includes:

  • Supporting bedtime anxiety and worries

  • Teaching simple coping strategies children can use independently

  • Strengthening daytime cooperation and clear boundaries

  • Providing parents with practical, firm-but-fair language that carries through to bedtime

  • Helping children build confidence in falling asleep and staying asleep on their own

 

This approach ensures your child is not just following a plan—but truly learning the skills needed for independent, confident sleep.
